Exegetical Theology:

Johannes Cocceius (c. 1669):

[Observata ad Danielem]

Verse 1. In the Third Year, &c. This verse declareth the time wherein this vision was revealed, to wit, under Cyrus, King, in the third year of his reign: after, verily, the edict for the restoration of the Jews had been proclaimed. The name, both native and that imposed by the Babylonians, of him to whom this vision was granted, is diligently set forth. Moreover, the truth of the word is affirmed, and it is shown to pertain unto a prolonged time: which is called צְבָא גָדוֹל. By this name is signified the order of things, and in particular the order of warfare; wherein watchman succeedeth watchman, soldier succeedeth soldier, and each hath the time of his office or station. See Job 14:14. This prophecy, howbeit, embraceth a great time and a manifold order of divers matters, for it reacheth even unto the resurrection of the dead, and the times immediately preceding it. There is also herein an exhortation to the reader to consider the matter, that is, to discern the truth of the vision in the things that shall come to pass.
