“Many shall be purified, made white, and tried: but the wicked shall do wickedly, and none of the wicked shall have understanding: but the wise shall understand.”

[Observata ad Danielem]
Verse 10. The reason is added: that many shall be purified and whitened and tried, that is, proved and tested, as in fire. Therefore it is needful that these things be not spoken more openly, that the faithfulness and zeal of the wise and understanding may be exercised, and that these things may be hid from the wicked, who are strangers to the righteousness of God, and that they may work wickedly, condemn and persecute the truth, establish superstition and idolatry, to wit, the worship of God in a closet in its place; and these writings, being in their hand, they may fulfill them unwittingly: though the wise shall understand, at least some part of these things, that they themselves be not deceived, being warned by the prophecy; and may hold fast a good hope, knowing that they are called heirs of the kingdom.
