[Observata ad Danielem]

Verses 11–12. Nevertheless, the Spirit in some wise explaineth the end of all these things: to wit, that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and that to set up the abomination of the astonished, that is, true prayer in faith, and the confession of the righteousness of God and of His kingdom, shall be turned into idolatry and false doctrine, to be upheld by men foolish and mad, 2 Timothy 3:9, not at all מַשְׂכִּילִים, wise: whom in verse 10 He calleth the wicked. This is, the falling away of many from the faith shall be. So that little by little impiety and lawlessness shall grow, until that mark be made and given for a law with curses, and at length by force be given also to those who had cast out and renounced lawlessness. Now in chapter 11:34, we have noted that the occasion whereby hypocrites shall come unto the faithful is the help which shall be shown unto the faithful. So in Micah 7:11, In the day that thy walls are to be built, in that day shall the decree be far removed, there shall be a departing from the word of God. And from the Apocalypse, chapters 12 and 13, it is clear that the Beast followeth the Dragon. The Beast is mingled with the church. Then there shall be, without doubt, an expectation of better times. Moreover, those who in patience and hope and in all readiness have waited, may rightly be called blessed: for, to wit, they shall see those good things of which it is in verses 2 and 3. Then shall follow the resurrection of the dead, and among others also that of Daniel, verse 13.

But concerning the time of taking away the daily sacrifice and setting up the abomination of the astonished, He saith that it is partly 1290 days, partly in the expectation of better things, 1335 days. None will doubt but that here years are meant. There will be need of great wisdom to fix the beginning of those years and to find the end wherein the 1290 years are fulfilled. Since we have not yet seen all things, but see that we are still in that expectation, we can bring nothing but conjecture, which time shall either confirm or amend. If from that time when on the mountain of holy beauty idolatry, aforetime cast out, was restored, that is, the Mass was restored in Germany in many places, with the triumph of the erring, who wrote that sacred Germany was restored, especially in Bohemia and the Palatinate, that is, from the year 1622, we reckon backward 1290 years, we shall come unto the year 332 or 333, when the Council of Nicaea was held, and thrones were set, in which some sat to whom judgment was given, Revelation 20:4, of whom a great part were false prophets, and made the image of the Beast, to wit, him to whom in that council the first seat was given.
