Verse 11: Καὶ τοῦτο, εἰδότες τὸν καιρόν, κτλ.

Consult the notes of the learned Beza, which may satisfy any learned man. Yet I add that τοῦτο can be taken absolutely as ideò or quocirca (therefore). In this sense, the plural ταῦτα, ταῦτα τοι, ταῦτα δή, and καὶ ταῦτα are often used, as may be seen in Budaeus. Further, the nominative εἰδότες (knowing) may also be construed with the following verse’s ὑποθώμεθα (let us suppose), thus: Therefore, knowing the opportunity of the time, that it is the hour for us now to have risen from sleep (for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed; the night is passed, the day hath drawn nigh), let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, etc.

Further, ὅτι ὥρα ἡμᾶς ἤδη ἐξ ὕπνου ἐγερθῆναι (that it is the hour for us now to rise from sleep): I see all take ἐγερθῆναι as ἐγεῖραι (to rise, to awake). Preserving the aorist, I prefer to have risen or to be awakened. As for his saying that salvation is now nearer to us than when we believed, it must be understood as a runner draweth nearer to the goal when he hath long run than when he began the race. The Syriac Scholiast saith somewhat differently: ܒܫܘܪܝܐ ܠܐ ܝܕܥܝܢ ܗܘܝܢ ܟܡܐ ܕܗܫܐ (in the beginning we knew not as much as now concerning the salvation promised to us).
